Not to be Missed at Peterborough

Peterborough Historic Fayre by day

Peterborough Historic Fayre by day

For the first time ever, there will be an amazing Historic Christmas Fayre right in the heart of Peterborough. Organised with Vivacity for the City Council and the Cathedral, the Fayre will be sited around the Cathedral Green and runs for four days, from 13th-16th December. On Thursday through to Saturday it will be open between 10am and 9pm, and on Sunday from 11am -4.30pm. This exciting new event builds on the popularity of the summer Festival of Living History, and will similarly feature characters andĀ traders from many periods of history. The green will be transformed with seasonal stalls and decorations, and throughout the day visitors will be entertained by a variety of performers, varying from tudor minstrels (Hautbois, who regularly visit in the Summer) to fire eaters and jugglers. There will a beer tent and hog roast for visitors needing refreshment and the Cathedral will be open for visitors who want to take a moment for quieter reflection. There are also a number of concerts and special events scheduled inside the Cathedral during the Historic Fayre, so do check their website too. Of course, for visitors one of the best things about this Historic Fayre is that like the summer weekend, entrance to this is absolutely free. It’s an ideal way to brighten up a shopping trip during the day or to get into the festive mood, why not come along as darkness falls and the stalls and Cathedral Green are beautifully illuminated against the night?

This promises to be a first class event and gives visitors the opportunity to buy a wide range of Christmas gifts, many of which are hand made, historic reproductions and not widely available but still relevant to modern homes and environments.

Update: It’s fair to say that the weather did not contribute favourably. A freezing start followed by torrential rain and strong winds is hardly Christmassy weather, but the traders and hardy visitors excelled themselves and worked hard to make the fair a success. Sunshine warmed the Cathedral Green during the weekend and many of the public who had turned up earlier during the week came back with their families and friends. Some 17000 came through the main gate during the four days. A big thank you to everyone who came, traded and worked hard to make this a special and memorable event.
